Hello again!
We have done a lot of chatting about parenting and the challenges faced when dealing with a dyslexic child. One of the major challenges we continue to face to this day with my daughter is getting her to enjoy reading. There have been many, many times over the last few years when we have just given up and stopped trying to encourage her to read.
Discovering graphic novels has been a relief.
It is encouraging to have found a channel where she is comfortable. She enjoys reading graphic novels. She can do it quickly, due to a lesser word count, and so it gives a feeling of accomplishment.
Below is a short and simple list of graphic novels that we discovered in our journey. This list is broken down into genres. We hope that you can find a suitable genre for yourself or your child using this list.
You can find these at your local library, local bookshops or online shops like Amazon, iBooks and Bookshop.org. Some of these are available as e-books, if that is your preferred medium.

Fantasy / Superhero
Who doesn’t like a good superhero or fantasy story. We grew up with these. Our kids are growing up with them. They are even modernizing the same ones that we know. Nice!
Below is a list of Fantasy and Superhero graphic novels that we think can be appealing to your child.

I do not know about you, but as a parent, you hear the name “Captain Underpants” and you roll your eyes or worse. That was me, for sure. I eventually gave in and it became a series that my daughter enjoyed at around age 10.
5. Captain Underpants – this series follow the lives of young friends and practical jokes. Note that the jokes surround potty humor and words like “stupid”, “fart” and “weirdo” are used. Manga
Manga is a Japanese styled comic or graphic novel that has fiercely gained popularity.
Full disclaimer: This is one that we have not read in our household yet. I have, however, researched some popular titles that you can look into if you or your child wish to explore. Please share your comments on this genre with us. Personally, I would like to give it a try soon.
These two seems to be popping up on many lists. May be worth it to give it a whirl. Most of these looks like they are more suitable to teenagers and adults.
6. Akira – explores Sci-fi, conspiracy, social problems. Is said to contain some profanity. Recommended Ages: 16+
7. One Piece – centers pirates and treasure. Recommended Ages: 14+
One Piece (Omnibus Edition), Vol. 1: Includes Vols. 1, 2 & 3
Conclusion:
We continue to maintain that positive and continuous support to your dyslexic child is what is needed. We discourage trying to force your child to read large novels or fine prints. These will add stress and a feeling of incompetency to your child. Instead, focus on developing a love for reading by finding a genre suitable to your child.
The aim: They must enjoy!
This list was purposely left short so as not to become overwhelming but instead give you an idea of what is available. Just say the word and we will continue to make more lists.
We encourage you to research the titles mentioned above to ensure that it is right for you.
